Yoga works effectively to sculpt the body and help peel off the pounds, says Nardini. “That’s because static holds build the lean muscle mass you need to keep your metabolism amped all day long, so you can burn more calories 24/7,” she says. She recommends three types of poses for optimal weight loss: strengthening poses, stretching poses and inversions.

Note from Sadie: Breathe slowly and deeply through the nose for the duration of this practice. Also, it’s O.K. if you can’t do the full expression of each pose—stay in alignment, and work to your edge of strength and flexibility for a few breaths. You’ll get there!
