The Bride’s Guide to Holiday Eating: 10 Get-Thin Tips

So what does that mean? Alcohol lowers metabolism and shifts the body into fat storage mode. “If you are serious about losing weight, you should have zero drinks,” says Avanti.

If you must drink alcohol, then drink no more than two nights a week, and limit yourself to just one, recommends Avanti. Instead, choose water with lemon or seltzer water with a lime and (small) splash of cranberry juice. If you choose a higher calorie drink such as juice or a mocktail, be sure to count it into your balanced meal.

7. Make things easier on yourself. If possible, choose a smaller plate and small utensils, says Avanti. It may seem like such a detail doesn’t matter, but a study by Cornell University found that subjects served themselves 31 percent more ice cream when given a larger bowl, and 15 percent more food when given a larger spoon, as compared to those with smaller bowls and spoons. And those subjects were nutrition experts!

Another way to make holiday party eating easier is to serve up your food, then move away from the buffet table or serving bowls if possible. In other words, remove yourself from temptation’s way.

8. Eat slowly and mindfully. Truly noticing and savoring the food you eat is a key piece of losing weight and developing a thin-bride mindset. And this advice is especially important when surrounded by holiday food. “Most people don’t eat as slowly as they think they do,” says Avanti. To combat the urge to rush, breathe deeply and savor the aromas around you. Notice the colors and textures of foods. Relax your shoulders and chew slowly to become aware of texture and flavor. And set your fork down between mouthfuls and sip water to give your body time to register the food you are eating.

If you’re eating a meal with the right balance of protein, carbs and fats, it will take about 20 minutes to feel full, that is, for your blood sugar to rise. If you eat too quickly, you’re more likely to overeat because you haven’t let that process happen. Besides, taking time to enjoy what you’re eating is just more fun.

There is a common misconception in the third month. They say you may gain weight from building muscle, but you also have to monitor how much you eat. The more calories you burn in a day, the more your body wants calories put back into it. So, even though you’re doing cardio, you may cancel out its effects by eating more. Just thought I’d share that to help everyone along the way.
